If you consider yourself an audiophile, then the Sony SA-CS9 subwoofer is best for you. It is great for everyday use and will satisfy most of the general listeners. It uses good quality electrical circuits along with a powerful transformer. We played music and movies as we enjoyed dynamic and tight bass. Place them in compact spaces to feel its presence. If you place them in larger spaces, the bass might sound weak.

Our Verdict

With 115W of power, the subwoofer is powerful enough to handle the low ends present in most of the contents including music, movies, and games. It has an automatic power saving option that is quite useful. The driver’s material is chosen so that the sound remains clean and clear even at high volumes. You can try placing multiple subwoofers in the room for a better and accurate bass response.

Details Review

Design and build:

The Sony SA-CS9 model belongs to the CS series of powered subwoofers. It has wood veneer finish, and the build seems durable. Inside the cabinet, the speaker has a heat sink in order to remove too much heat, if that occurs. It uses sound absorbing materials to eliminate unwanted vibration in the cabinet that might directly color the bass. It has a reduced baffle area which is done to eliminate distortion. Overall, Sony uses as many techniques as possible to ensure pure and true sound with optimum clarity.

Sony SA-CS9 active subwoofer has a 10” woofer driver. The driver with cone diaphragm is capable of working with more air volume which results in thumping bass. MRC fiber woofers can hold their rigidity as they work harder by moving with greater speed. They ensure undistorted and clean sound. With a variable low pass filter knob, you can easily choose the desired frequency where you want the sub to operate.

It has an enclosed system with bass reflex ducts that deals with and gets rid of unwanted noise. While we wish the lowest frequency would go as low as 20 Hz, a 28Hz is not so bad after all. This means you might not get full range sound but what you will 28 is quite impressive. In case you think the room acoustics need improvement, you can use things like acoustic panel that you need to purchase separately.

Use case:

You can create a large home theater and use the SA-CS9 subwoofer as a part of the system. Some compatible speakers are Sony SSCS3 tower speakers, SSCS8 center channel speaker, SSCS5 bookshelf speakers, and SSCSE Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.

The back side of the SA-CS9 subwoofer has LFE input that can be used to connect to the compatible receiver or amplifier. Use the LFE for receivers with subwoofer pre-out port. While connecting to the amplifier, check for the sub out port. If the receiver does not have sub out port, then use the line-level inputs to connect to stereo receiver or CD player. Another connection option is speaker level output. This is for speakers that do not have a built-in amplifier.

Compatible device:

The wide-range subwoofer will work with Sony speakers or speakers from any other brand. You can pair bookshelf speakers for compact spaces, or you can go with floorstanding speakers for large spaces.

Sony SA-CS9 subwoofer is an affordable subwoofer. You can consider it as one of the best powered subwoofers under $250.

Who is the Sony SA-CS9 best for?

Sony SA-CS9 is best for users who are looking for budget-friendly subwoofer. It is compact in size that will fit into rooms with tight spaces. The bass is adequate to enjoy audio performance for different types of contents.

What is subwoofer crawl technique?

Subwoofer crawl is an important thing to keep in mind as you decide to purchase a subwoofer. This is a method for subwoofer placement. Here one person will move the subwoofer from one place to another in the room. Another person will play tracks and bend over closer to the floor in order to listen the bass response. In this way, you can find the most suitable spot for the subwoofer in the room.
