Pioneer VSX-1131 7.2-Channel AV Receiver Review
For those who desire strong sound without paying premium prices, tech aficionados and home theater fanatics will find the Pioneer VSX-1131 to be an excellent option. Its deep surround sound and many speaker configurations let you enjoy it in medium to large-sized living rooms or specialized home theaters. It is not for the casual user seeking basic plug-in-play equipment, however. This receiver can be your next best friend to add to your entertainment system if you appreciate personalizing your audio experience and are not bothered by the learning curve.
Our Verdict
For movie buffs and gamers particularly with Dolby Atmos, the VSX-1131 offers immersive sound and strong features. Although its strong design and many of connection choices are impressive, novices may find its weight overwhelming. Although Wi-Fi problems and sporadic heat buildup are drawbacks, generally speaking, particularly in bigger areas, its cost is justified. It's a fantastic purchase if you appreciate sound quality and have patience with setup. You may have to go elsewhere if you want something simpler.

Design
First let us discuss the design. Looking at the Pioneer VSX-1131, one gets a sense of a major piece of audio gear. This is built for someone who is serious about sound, hence its size and layout remind you that it is not attempting to be subtle. The front panel looks professionally clean; it has a huge volume knob, an input selection, and a tiny yet handy display displaying the current input and basic settings.
Though not showy, the design is practical. Said another way, it is definitely hefty. Should you consider putting it in a smaller area, be ready for its presence to somewhat dominate the space. I had it in my living room, and organising other items seemed like I had to work around it. It might seem a little awkward if you lack a suitable AV stand or robust cabinet.
On the positive side, the straightforward yet clear display makes it simple to see what input you are using or change settings. The drawback is all the back connections, particularly in cases where AV receivers are unfamiliar. At first sight, the abundance of ports—HDMI, speaker terminals, auxiliary inputs—may be rather frightening. Once you have the feel of it, however, the arrangement makes sense and managing becomes simpler.
Although the back has a lot of buttons, generally it appears professional; yet, given your level of experience, the sheer count of buttons might be taxing.
Connectivity
One thing that attracted me to the VSX-1131 was its connectivity options. With seven HDMI inputs, you may connect in all of your devices without continually switching cables. Since I run a gaming console, Blu-ray player, and streaming box all at once and still have additional slots for other devices, this was quite a benefit for me. It was a nice surprise as I had prior experience with receivers that lag or glitch when switching between inputs; the HDMI switching is fast and responsive.
Wi-Fi configuration, however, caused some problems. I spent much more time than I had anticipated getting the receiver to connect to my home network. It seemed as if it was not always constant, not just a one-time problem either. Streamlining music from my phone via Google Cast was seamless when it worked, but sometimes the connection broke at random. It might have been a problem with my network, but I have had less problems with other devices in the same vicinity.
On the other side, Bluetooth was a snap. It maintained a steady connection all through and matched fast with my phone. For many hours, I streamed music to see whether it missed a beat. It never skipped. You will have a great experience if Bluetooth streaming appeals to you more than depending on Wi-Fi.
Multi-zone audio is one of the nice things this receiver provides. I thought it would be ideal for parties or listening to music in many areas to have one zone in your main room and another somewhere else. To be honest, however, preparing this was not simple. It required much trial and error, and I consulted the handbook more than once. The multi-zone function may cause more hassle than it's worth for someone who isn't tech-savvy, but once it's configured it performs well.
Performance
Its 7.2-channel arrangement produces some rather remarkable surround sound. I matched it with a complete speaker arrangement, and when I fired up an action movie, I could hear the clarity of conversation in subdued situations and the rumbling of explosions. I felt as if I was in a little theatre in my own home room from the immersive sound.
The VSX-1131 also supports Dolby Atmos; when I tested Atmos-enabled video, the sound distribution really changed. In several instances, it actually seemed like noises were coming from above, providing a feeling of depth and height. It's particularly clear in films with active soundtracks where events surround you. Movie buffs will find great advantage here.
Still, configuring the speakers required more work than I had anticipated. Based on the size and form of your space, the receiver comes with MCACC room calibration, designed to assist balance the sound. Although it's useful, I discovered it needed few attempts to get things sounds how I intended. Although initially it might be annoying if you are not accustomed with calibrating audio, the rewards are well worth it after it is dialled in.
The way the receiver ran after extended sessions bothered me, however. Having seen a two-hour movie, I saw the unit was somewhat warm. Although I haven't seen any performance declines from it, if you want to use it for long stretches of time, I would advise either leaving it in a well-ventilated area or acquiring a cooling fan.
Though there were some setup issues, the sound quality was outstanding—especially if you like immersive surround experiences like films and gaming.
When and Where to Use
Clearly designed for a home theatre, the VSX-1131 This receiver will help you create a cinematic environment in your living room or have a dedicated media room and want to makeover. It was ideal for my medium-sized living area, but in a smaller space you could find it a little excessive.
It's also a great option for gamers. I like playing several action-packed games, and the surround sound gave the experience even more excitement. It really enhances the realism as you hear everything—footsteps approaching behind you, the sound of gunshots resonating far away. Again, however, you will need the room for it. Its might may overwhelm small systems.
Compatible Devices
The fact that the VSX-1131 performs so well on a broad spectrum of devices is among its better features. My PS5, Blu-ray player, and even an antique record player are connected up to and it ran everything without problems. There are many HDMI ports, hence I had no trouble juggling several devices. It also fits streaming devices, therefore after I fixed the Wi-Fi problems, casting music or programs from my phone was simple.
If you like utilising voice assistants, Google Assistant also fits well. This was a great advantage when I needed to alter the music or level without getting up.
Ease of Use
Now, with the VSX-1131, simplicity of use is a difficult topic. Having previously used AV receivers, you will most likely find it very simple after the basic setup. If you are a total novice, however, it will seem as if the learning curve is severe.
For instance, the remote control has buttons abound. It does everything you need, although it takes some time to figure out what each button does. Though they aid, the on-screen menus are not as user-friendly as I would have like. I spent a good bit of time reviewing the handbook, particularly during the first setup stage.
Navigating the many features and settings becomes second nature for a more tech-savvy user, but if you're not patient it might seem a little intimidating.
Cost
Regarding cost, the VSX-1131 falls in a reasonable range given its features. For less than what other more-end receivers pay, you are getting Dolby Atmos, multi-zone audio, plus an enormous number of connection choices. For someone like myself who enjoys games and films, it seemed like a wise purchase.
On the other hand, if you're more of a laid-back user looking for simple surround sound, you may feel as like you're paying for capabilities you won't really use. Simple, more affordable choices abound that may nonetheless provide decent sound without all the trimmings.
