ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 is great for music and can handle movies or shows pretty well. Low ends are clean and deep. It is adequate to satisfy most of the users. Place them in medium sized rooms and the soundstage will be powerful. It can produce room-filling sound and has good imaging. Voices are intelligible even without a center channel. We recommend pairing a subwoofer for audio purists while listening to music.

Our Verdict

Elac Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 is a great speaker for everyday use. Use them with desktop, PC or other audio sources. If you want to use it for movies and connect to a TV, we suggest creating a 3.1 system by pairing a subwoofer and center channel. Elac Uni-Fi series already offers you multiple speaker options. Consider buying this speaker when you already have an amplifier otherwise the total cost will be high.

Since the speaker supports bi-wiring and bi-amping, the transparency and dynamic range will improve. This will also reduce any sort of distortion.

Details Review

Design:

ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 is a 3-way passive speaker that is made of MDF. In order to minimize resonance or vibration, the enclosure uses perimeter bracing. The wood veneer finish feels premium and durable. It comes with detachable magnetic cloth grille that is grey in color.

Performance:

ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 has three drivers in each speaker. This results in accurate sound production as each driver can do its dedicated job. The wide surround tweeter is designed so that it can easily blend with the mid-range. Tweeter and midrange driver are placed within one voice coil. The woofers are well-engineered and produces tight bass. To improve the bass, the speaker has slot ports on the front side in each speaker.

This makes them placement friendly, minimizes any noise while boosts the low ends. Pair the speaker with a suitable subwoofer if you seek the extra oomph, you can check the Elac Sub 3030 via an amp. It has wide soundstage that is powerful and room-filling for compact spaces. Voices are clear that means it is good for movies. The speakers are fulfilling and has good imaging. Like other Elac speakers, this model has custom made crossover with high quality components.

This results in easier and natural transition between tweeter, mids and woofer. Place the speaker on any flat surface or use speaker stands like ELAC LS20. Although the speakers have front ports so placing them closer to walls is possible, it is still suggested to leave a gap of 1-2’. Allow the speakers to go through break-in and follow the placement instructions from the manual. Toe-in and perform multiple trial and error in different position to find the best spot.

Connectivity and control:

This depends on the amp you choose. Based on the types of devices you want to connect like TV, vinyls, CD, Blu-ray, PC, choose an amp.

 Use case:

Use the speakers as 2.0 system or pair a sub for 2.1 setup in small to medium sized rooms. For large rooms, go for a 3.1 or 5.1 setup. It is best for music but can handle movies as well. To achieve a full range tone, use a subwoofer.

Compatible device:

If you prefer listening to your contents at a higher volume level, make sure to choose an amp with high output. The speaker isn’t the easier-to-drive model in the market. That said, you can still match and find an amplifier. Choose one from our amplifier list or as per your preference: Willsenton R8 Tube amp, Moor Amps Angel 6, AIYIMA A07, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc.

Pair the ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 bookshelf speaker with floorstanding loudspeaker (UFR52), a bookshelf loudspeaker (UBR62), and a center-channel speaker (UCR52). The subwoofer model is  already mentioned, you can also choose one from different brand. Note that, these speakers must be connected to an amplifier and not to the speaker directly.

Cost

This pair of speakers from Elac is costlier than other models like Elac DBR62 or Uni-Fi UB5.

FAQ:

What is the difference between bi-wiring and bi-amping?

Elac Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 supports both bi-wiring and bi-amping. Bi-wiring means using two separate wires for the woofer and tweeter and then connect them to a single amplifier. On the other hand, bi-amping means using two different amplifiers, one for tweeter and one for woofer. However, make sure these amps have the same gain.

How many subwoofers should I pair with Elac Uni-Fi Refernce UBR62?

If you have tight spaces a single subwoofer is enough to enjoy the low frequencies in movies and music. However, if you have the space and consider yourself and audio purist, two subwoofers will be better.
